Tulum occupies a particular position in the imagination of contemporary travel — somewhere between an archaeological site, a wellness retreat, and a beach destination — and the reality is more interesting than any of those categories suggest. The ruins of the walled Maya city stand on a limestone cliff directly above the Caribbean, which makes them unique among major pre-Columbian sites in Mexico: you can stand among 13th-century structures and look out over the same sea the Maya traders once crossed. Early morning, before the tour groups arrive, the effect is genuinely striking.
The beach strip below the ruins stretches south through the Tulum National Park and into the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-protected area of mangrove, wetland, and reef that keeps the lower coast largely undeveloped. The hotels and beach clubs that line the road between the town and the reserve range from rustic-chic to architecturally ambitious, and most operate with at least a stated commitment to sustainability — though scrutiny of what that means in practice varies. A bicycle is the best way to move along this strip; the road is flat, the distances are manageable, and the jungle on one side and the sea on the other make even the commute worthwhile.
Gran Cenote, a few kilometers from the beach road, is the most accessible of the region's freshwater sinkholes — clear enough to see every detail of the submerged cave system below, and cool enough in the midday heat to feel genuinely restorative. Cenote Dos Ojos and the Aktun Chen cave system offer more adventurous options for snorkeling and diving. The town of Tulum itself, separate from the beach zone, has grown into a lively place with good restaurants and a market worth visiting in the morning. Come with the expectation of doing less than you planned and staying longer than you intended.
