Cusco is the historical and cultural heart of Peru. Once the capital of the mighty Inca Empire, this highland city sits at over 3,400 meters above sea level and still carries the spirit of its ancient past.
The city is a fascinating blend of Inca and Spanish colonial architecture. Many colonial buildings were constructed directly on top of precise Inca stone foundations, creating a unique layered history you can see throughout the streets. The central Plaza de Armas, with its grand cathedral and surrounding colonial buildings, is one of the most beautiful squares in South America.
Cusco serves as the main gateway to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. Beyond being a transit point, it offers plenty to explore — from the impressive Sacsayhuamán fortress and the colorful San Pedro Market to traditional Andean villages and stunning mountain scenery just outside the city.
